Are Prescriptions More Likely to Need Custom Options?

Yes, prescription glasses are much more likely to require custom options compared to non-prescription glasses. This is because prescription glasses require unique vision issues, such as myopia, hyperopia, and astigmatism. Prescription glasses may also require pupillary distance and special coatings.

What can be Personalised in Custom Glasses?

There are many personalisation options in custom glasses at Oscar Wylee. These customisations include frame fit and sizing, lens types and coatings, thinner lenses for stronger prescriptions (also known as high-index glasses), materials and finishes, and customisations based on your personal details. These personalisation options are explained in more detail below.

1. Frame Fit and Sizing

Frame fit and sizing can be personalised at Oscar Wylee, tailored to your face, aiming for an optimal fit. Adjustments can be made to better match your face shape, bridge width, and temple length. Optical dispensers will often ask to measure your pupillary distance (PD) to ensure an optimal fit. Pupillary distance measurements are a professional service.

2. Lens Types and Coatings

Oscar Wylee offers a range of lens types and coatings that you can choose from and add to your prescription or non-prescription glasses. These lens types and coatings include single vision or progressive lenses, blue light filtering, and anti-reflective coating, tints, polarisation, and photochromic lenses.

Single Vision or Progressive Lenses

Single vision lenses refer to lenses that contain one prescription over the entire lens, which is used to correct a single vision issue, including near vision and distance vision. Progressive lenses are multifocal lenses that have three prescriptions within the lenses for people who experience problems with near, far and intermediate vision.

Blue Light Filtering

Blue light filtering involves a special coating in your lenses to neutralise the blue light emitted from LCD/LED screens, such as computers, TV screens and smartphones. Blue light filters may help reduce eye strain and fatigue. Please note this filter is only available for clear lenses and is unavailable for sunglasses due to the tint. It is important to note that blue light filtering is a non-therapeutic cosmetic coating. Our Blue Light Filter is only available in standard 1.5, 1.6 and 1.67 index lenses. For more information, please visit our Blue Light Glasses page.

Anti-Reflective Coatings

Oscar Wylee offers 2 types of anti-reflective coatings: Anti-Reflective and Premium Anti-Reflective. Our Anti-Reflective coating is a coating added to the lens that makes the lens anti-reflective, scratch-resistant and adds UV protection. Our premium anti-reflective coating has the same benefits as our anti-reflective coating, with the added advantages of extra scratch resistance, smudge resistance and anti-static.

Tints

Oscar Wylee provides a range of tints, which are dyes added to the lenses to make them darker for sunglasses. At Oscar Wylee, our lens colours are separated across three main categories; mirror tints, fashion tints and sunglasses tints. At Oscar Wylee, our mirror tints can be pink, blue, silver, yellow and orange colours. Our fashion lens colours include yellow, blue, red and pink. Our Oscar Wylee sunglasses tints come in grey, brown, and green colours. Tints include our Basic Anti-Reflective coating as standard.

Polarised

Polarisation is available for glasses, which is a coating that is applied to the lens to darken it and add colour. This also reduces glare on the horizontal wavelength. Oscar Wylee sunglasses can be customised with prescription lenses, including both single vision and multifocal (progressive) options, allowing you to replace the original tints. Polarisation at Oscar Wylee includes our Basic Anti-Reflective coating as standard.

Photochromic

Photochromic lenses are clear lenses that tint when exposed to UV light. Oscar Wylee has a range of colours available in our brand of photochromic lenses, referred to as adaptive lenses, and we also offer Transitions® GEN S™ lenses at an additional price on top of your frames. At Oscar Wylee, the different Transitions® GEN S™ lens colours available include grey, brown, sapphire, graphite green, ruby, emerald, amethyst and amber.

3. Thinner Lenses for Stronger Prescriptions

Thinner lenses for stronger prescriptions are known as high-index lenses. High-index lenses are a type of lens that is thinner and lighter than your standard optical lens, and are well-suited to those with a high prescription. By choosing a high-index lens, the lenses will be lightweight, and the design may provide improved visual clarity and reduced peripheral distortion.

4. Materials and Finishes

Frames can vary in material (such as acetate or metal), as well as colour, texture, and finish. The choice between materials, colours, textures, and finishes is based primarily on your personal style and preferences. At Oscar Wylee, we provide a varied range of materials, colours, textures, and finishes to suit your preferred needs. We offer materials such as acetate, stainless steel, titanium, and bio acetate, and a wide range of colours from neutrals, to pastels, and vibrant colours. Different material textures are based on the material used, for example, a shiny finish on acetate frames or a consistent colour texture seen in clear glasses.

5. Personal Details

Personal details include the measurement between your pupils (pupillary distance), how your glasses sit on your face, and how tight the arms of your glasses are. These preferences can be customised by our optical dispensers to aim for a comfortable fit based on your needs.

Mix and Match at Oscar Wylee

At Oscar Wylee, we see your eyewear as more than an important medical necessity; we want you to be able to express yourself through your frames. Our Mix and Match philosophy gives you full creative control, ensuring your frames are as unique as your personality. Our range of optical glasses and sunglasses is designed to be versatile, to suit your individual style and preferences. At Oscar Wylee, our friendly optical dispensers can assist you in customising your lenses from a wide range of optical glasses and sunglasses. The world is your oyster!

How you can customise:

  • Sun-to-Optical: If you love a pair of our sunglasses, but would prefer an optical frame, you can remove the tint and replace it with your clear prescription lenses. Perhaps, enhance them further with a blue light filter for digital comfort.
  • Optical-to-Sun: Do you love one of our optical frames, but have a sunglasses vision in mind? Transform it into custom prescription sunglasses by adding polarised lenses, fashion tints, or mirror tints. For the best of both worlds, add Transitions® lenses to any frame, allowing your glasses to darken and lighten based on your environment.

Let's explore a unique mix and match example at Oscar Wylee. Take our Amelia frames. These are a popular sunglasses frame, but customers also love to personalise these frames into optical lenses, and add their single vision or multifocal prescription to suit their eyewear needs. The result? A chic, oversized cat eye glasses frame that is sure to make people look twice.

What is the Difference Between Custom and Standard Glasses?

There are differences between custom and standard glasses that customers may want to know before purchasing. A table of the pros and cons of both standard and custom glasses can be read below.

Pros Cons
Custom Often allows improved comfort
Can match your personal style
A tailored fit may improve vision
Usually more expensive than standard glasses
More steps are involved in the process
Standard Usually cheaper than custom glasses
Fewer steps are involved in the process
May be less comfortable, as they are often mass-produced
May not suit your personal style
May not fit properly, which can hinder clarity

How the Custom Glasses Process Works

The custom glasses process works in 4 main steps: an eye test, frame selection, lens customisation, and fitting and adjustments. During your eye test, an optometrist will test your eyes and provide you with a prescription if necessary. Once you have received your prescription, our Oscar Wylee optical dispensers will be able to assist you in selecting your frames, based on your prescription and preferences. Following this, you will be able to customise your lenses with add-ons such as a blue light filter or polarisation. Finally, once you have received your glasses, our optical dispensers will assist you in final fitting and professional adjustments.

Is an Updated Eye Test Required First?

Yes, an updated eye test is required to customise and purchase personalised glasses. Our optometrists can perform your eye test to ensure your prescription is up to date and your glasses are right for you.

How do Custom Glasses Correct Astigmatism?

Custom lenses are designed to correct the refractive error associated with astigmatism. These specially shaped lenses adjust how light enters the eye, and improve clarity and reduce distortion for patients.

How are Lenses Personalised for People with Astigmatism?

Lenses are tailored with specific curvature based on the prescription. Lenses for people with astigmatism correct uneven focusing caused by the eye shape. This ensures clearer and sharper vision for patients with astigmatism.

What are the Benefits of Memory Metal Frames for Custom Glasses?

The benefits of memory metal frames for custom glasses are their exceptional durability, flexibility, and comfort, which may allow for better customisation. Memory metal frames are made with shape-memory alloy, a type of material that allows the glasses to be bent or twisted lightly, and then return to their original shape. Oscar Wylee has a range of memory metal frames available as part of our Memory Twist collection. At Oscar Wylee, certain parts of our memory metal frames are made from a titanium alloy. While durable, memory metal frames contain nickel and may not be suitable for individuals with a known nickel sensitivity.

Are Memory Metal Glasses More Flexible than Regular Metal Frames?

Yes, memory metal glasses are more flexible than regular metal frames. Memory metal glasses are designed to be more durable and flexible than frames made from other materials, but they are not unbreakable.

How to Choose the Right Custom Glasses

To choose the right custom glasses, customers should start with their prescription, choose a frame style, select lens options, apply custom adjustments, and then undergo final fitting and refinements. These 5 steps are explained below.

  1. 1. Start with your prescription: Customers must have an updated prescription they can use to choose and purchase their glasses. Our optometrists can perform an eye test for you and provide you with a prescription afterwards, so you can choose your frames straight away.
  2. 2. Choose a frame style: Our optical dispensers are expertly trained to help you choose a frame style to best suit your face shape, skin tone, prescription needs, and personal preferences.
  3. 3. Select lens options: Once you have chosen your frames, you can choose lens options to add on, such as a blue light filter or polarisation.
  4. 4. Apply custom adjustments: Often, an optical dispenser will measure the distance between your pupils, also known as your pupillary distance or PD. This will be used when your glasses are made, to ensure your lenses fit your eyes optimally.
  5. 5. Fitting and refinement: Fitting and final refinement of your glasses may be necessary once you have received them, done by our qualified optical dispensers in-store. Common final adjustments include adjusting nose pads, bending temple arms, and levelling frames. Oscar Wylee provides lifetime adjustments once you have purchased glasses from us.

What Should You Consider Before Selecting Your Frames and Lenses?

There are important factors to consider before selecting your frames and lenses, including your face shape, skin tone, prescription strength, and lifestyle factors. These factors are explained below.

  • Face shape: Face shape is an important factor to consider when selecting your glasses, as certain face shapes will suit certain types of glasses. The most common face shapes are round, oval, heart, square, pear and diamond. For example, round and diamond faces may best suit rectangle glasses, as the angular lines of the glasses balance out the softer features of these face shapes.
  • Skin tone: Skin tone is another important factor to consider when choosing glasses for yourself. It is often recommended to opt for earthy tones like gold, brown, and red if you have a warmer complexion, and look for black, silver, and blue tones if you have a cooler undertone.
  • Prescription strength: Prescription strength is an important consideration when choosing glasses. For high prescriptions, high-index glasses are recommended, as they reduce thickness and weight.
  • Lifestyle factors: Lifestyle factors are an important factor when choosing your frames. Lifestyle factors to consider when buying glasses are workplace needs, level of physical activity, and everyday comfort. If you spend all day on the computer, you may opt for blue light glasses to aid in comfort. If you are particularly active, you might choose more durable, flexible materials like Titanium. The best frames are ones that you forget you are wearing, with no pressure on your temples or nose.

It is important to note that although there may be better glasses to suit certain face shapes and skin tones, ultimately it is down to the individual and what makes them feel the most comfortable and confident.

Does your Lifestyle Influence the Best Choice?

Yes, lifestyle influences the best choice of glasses for patients. Different lifestyle activities require different lenses and frame features. People who are significantly active may need more durable frames, while screen users may prefer protective lenses, such as blue light lenses.
